I've never personally experienced this before, but it is possible, the people trying to use such viruses would merely have to find a way to exploit the platform / OS that the phone is using. From what I've seen, there aren't any apps that are all that great for protecting your phone. Your best method to protect your phone is going to be sticking to software published on your phone's store, such as Google or Apple store.

Software downloaded elsewhere should be assumed to be questionable.

It is good to use anti virus for your smartphone as there are many unauthorized sites that may carry harmful viruses which can destroy our personal data. I use avast anti virus for my phone. Its free and it blocks unwanted sites by itself.

I suggest you to use Antivirus for Android app for your smartphone. It scans your device for dangerous apps and it doesn't use much memory. Viruses can adversely affect the phone's performance, its always recommended to use anti virus in phones also.
