Because there isn't going to be an iphone9. Apple decided that the iPhone X  or 10, was so much more advanced than their new iPhone 8 that they would skip 9 !!

iPhone X sounds so much more mysterious and advanced it's simply a marketing ploy to sell a handset costing over $1000 lol !!!
