How can I switch my mobile service provider in India?

I have a number of Idea mobile but I want to change my service provider while retaining the same number. I want to switch to Airtel. It seems Airtel has much better 3G service that Idea.

One can switch between different network providers due to the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme available. According to the TRAI recommendations, the porting has to be done in 7 days.
