Since 1966, when the shilingi replaced the East African shilling, Tanzania has used the shilingi as its official currency. TSh is used as the official currency symbol.

The Bank of Tanzania first released 20 and 50 senti and 5 shilingi coins in 1972, followed by 10 senti in 1977, 10 and 20 shilingi in 1990, and 100 shilingi in 1993. Julius Nyerere, who served as Tanganyika's Prime Minister from 1961 to 1962 and President from 1963 to 1964, is depicted on the coin's front.

Four impalas running along with the denomination are depicted on the reverse of the coin. This coin is a gold-colored member of the 1993-2015 series with a fluted rim.
