Some chisels' handle and blade are constructed of metal or wood and have a sharp edge. Chiselling includes pushing the blade into a substance to cut it. 

The driving power can be applied by hand, or with a mallet or hammer. In industrial applications, a hydraulic ram or falling weight ('trip hammer') may be employed to force a chisel into the material.]]>
