It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. From an architectural perspective, it was conceived as a modern forum.  It also preserves the Altar of the Fatherland, first an altar of the goddess Rome, then also a shrine of the Italian Unknown Soldier. The existing design of the Piazza del Campid oglio and the surrounding palazzi was created by Renaissance artist and architect Michael Angelo Buonarroti in 1536–1546. Longbeak rattlebox, chepil, chepilin, and chipilin are some more common names.

Chipilín leaves contain high levels of beta carotene, calcium, magnesium, and iron. They can be used to tamale doughs for color and flavor, dried and used as a herb, or cooked and served green.

The plant's pods split open to release the seeds across a large region when they dry. Chipilín has earned the reputation of an invasive plant due to this and the fact that animals do not consume it.
