Plectranthus was thought to have absorbed Coleus and Solenostemon, however a recent phylogenetic analysis revealed that Plectranthus was paraphyletic in relation to other closely related taxa in the subtribe Plectranthinae. 

Coleus was revived in the genus's most recent taxonomic treatment, and 212 names were altered from combinations in Plectranthus, Pycnostachys, and Anisochilus. 

Following the confirmation of its identification as a phylogenetically different genus by phylogenetic analyses, Equilabium was split off from Plectranthus.]]>
