Video compression works by using a program called a codec to get rid of the redundant and/or imperceptible elements of a video. This is how it reduces the size of the file without affecting the quality of the footage. The difference between the original and compressed video's size is called the compression ratio. 

Video compression formats usually gain popularity if they're efficient, widely compatible, actively supported, and provided under a permissive (usually open source) license. 

Some of the most popular formats for compressing video streams include: 

H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC): Short for Advanced Video Coding, it's the most common compression format today. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube use this format for efficient delivery, as it offers high-quality video at low file sizes. 

H.265 (HEVC): Short for High Efficiency Video Coding, it's the successor to H.264. It often produces better quality video at smaller file sizes than H.264, but at the cost of being more resource hungry. It also requires a license for commercial use, which might explain its low adoption rates. 

VP8: Open-sourced by Google after its acquisition of inventor On2 Technologies, it's mainly used for short looping video formats, as an alternative to GIFs. 

VP9: Invented by Google, VP9 is a free and open-source competitor to H.265 and a successor to VP8. It's ideal for streaming above Full HD video, but is compatible with a relatively small variety of devices, so adoption is still slow. 

AV1: Short for AOMedia Video 1, it's meant to be a successor to VP9. Netflix is a major champion of this technology, recently rolling it out to its TV video player. 

FLV: Short for Flash Video, made for use with Adobe Flash. Adobe stopped supporting Flash in December 2020 due to security flaws in the software 

YouTube now allows content creators the flexibility to customize their channel’s name and photo without affecting their Google account identity. Creators are no longer constrained to having matching names across YouTube and other Google services like Gmail. They can craft a unique brand for their YouTube presence, separate from their personal Google profile. 

You can change your YouTube channel name, just make sure it follows YouTube Community Guidelines. After changing your name, it may take a few days for the new name to update and display across YouTube. If you change your YouTube channel name and picture, it will only be visible on YouTube. 

YouTube Shorts is a way for anyone to turn an idea into a chance to connect with new audiences anywhere in the world. Using YouTube’s Shorts creation tools, you can upload a short-form vertical video as a Short.

TikTok uses your device’s location information to recommend content and popular ads in your area. TikTok also suggests your account to other users based on your region. If you want more English views on your videos, you can tag an English-speaking location in your video. Make sure your video’s language and description are also in English. 

Deactivating your TikTok account allows you to put it on a temporary hold. When you're ready to get back on TikTok, you can reactivate it anytime. You can temporarily disable your TikTok account for 30 days from the Settings and privacy section of the app.

YouTube watch history makes it easy to find videos you recently watched, and, when it’s turned on, allows YouTube to give relevant video recommendations. You can control your watch history by deleting or turning off your history. If you delete some or all of your watch history, YouTube won’t base future video recommendations on that content. Any videos that you watch while history is turned off won't show up in your history. 

Assuming viewing history is enabled, you'll then be shown everything you've watched recently on YouTube, with the most recent views at the top. There may well be a few videos you've forgotten about here; this is the place to go to if you want to watch again something good or useful that you've seen lately. 

If you really want to clean up your YouTube page, you do need to delete that history because otherwise, you’ll still be getting recommendations based on everything you watched before you hit that Pause button. 

In the YouTube app settings, enable the "Limit Mobile Data Usage" option. This feature reduces video quality to save data, so keep in mind that the video may appear slightly pixelated. 

There are other ways to do it. We recommend being on Wi-Fi as often as possible so you don’t use a bunch of mobile data. You used to need a third-party data saver app to restrict usage even more. 

Keep in mind, live-streamed data uses about the same about of data as a comparably long YouTube video at the same resolution and frame rate. 

Open the YouTube app, hit your profile picture, and then tap the Time Watched option. This shows you how much YouTube you’ve watched in the last week. The option below that, your data in YouTube will show you your watch history, comment history, playlist history, etc.

You can view tagged locations on the watch page for any of your videos. Viewers will view the tag on any of your public, unlisted, or private videos you share with them. Viewers can click location to search for public videos from the same location. 

While the mobile version is convenient and quick, it doesn’t provide the same depth of data as the desktop version. Both platforms provide real-time data, but the way they present it might differ slightly in layout and navigability.

The take a break reminder lets you set a reminder to take a break while watching videos. The reminder will pause your video until you dismiss it or resume playing the video. This feature is available on versions 13.17+ of the YouTube app on mobile devices. 

You can also set take a break reminder by tapping your profile picture and then Time Watched. 

 Going forward, once you hit your self-imposed time limit in the YouTube app, an alert will show up reminding you it's time to take a break. When the alert shows up, you can either adjust the amount of time between interruptions or dismiss it and continue watching a video.
