Australia is home to the blue-banded bee species Amegilla cingulata. Many scientific institutions are currently investigating the ways in which A. cingulata's unique "buzz pollination" helps agriculture.

A. cingulata shares a striking resemblance in appearance with multiple other Amegilla species. Its abdomen is striped with a faint opalescent blue color, unlike honey bees.

The male has five complete bands compared to the female's four, which allows them to be recognized from one another. A. cingulata can reach a maximum size of 10–12 mm (0.39–0.47 in).
