The official currency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the Congolese franc. 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 franc notes were first introduced in 1998.

These were followed by the 200 franc note in 2000 and the 500 franc note in 2002. New banknote series were released in 2012 with values of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 20,000 francs.

A "Coffret Kanioka," a traditional craft of the Kanyok people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two "Okapis," or Congolese giraffe, the "Banque Centrale du Congo" (Central Bank of Congo) symbol, a rough sketch of the republic's map, and the denomination are all featured on the front of the 1000 Congolese note.
