The front of the 1 Ethiopian Birr coin depicts a picture of a stylised lion, the nation's national animal, along with the date of release. The back of the coin features an image of Lady Justice standing on a scale. This currency dates from 2002 to 2008, has a six-segment rim, and is gold and silver in hue.
Since Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, officially requested in 1931 that the name Ethiopia be used instead of Abyssinia, the birr has been the country's official unit of currency. The Italian lira was established a short time later, following the Italian occupation, and the Ethiopian banknotes were no longer in use.
Indian, Egyptian, British, and British East African money were all established and acknowledged as legal tender during the East African Bell of the British Empire in 1941. The East African shilling was eventually proclaimed as the only official currency in 1942, with the Italian lira limited to 50 lire.
