Since 1966, when the shilling superseded the East African shilling, it has served as Kenya's official unit of exchange. KSh is used as the official currency symbol.

The first coins were released by the Central Bank of Kenya in values of 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents as well as 1 and 2 shillings. The 5 shilling coin was first issued in 1973, and was followed by the 10 shilling, 20 shilling, and 40 shilling coins in the following years.

2018 saw the launch of a new coin series by the Central Bank of Kenya in the values of 1, 5, and 20 shillings. The photographed coin is from the new series depicting a lion on its front.
