Samdruptsey Monastery, also known as Phodong Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery located in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, near the town of Gangtok.
The monastery was founded in 1717 by the fourth Chogyal (King) of Sikkim, Phuntsog Namgyal. It is one of the six major monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim, and is considered to be one of the most important monasteries in the region.
The main attraction of the monastery is a statue of Guru Rinpoche (also known as Padmasambhava), who is considered to be the patron saint of Sikkim. The statue is about 135 feet tall and can be seen from a distance of several kilometers. It is the tallest statue of Guru Rinpoche in the world.
