About 70 species of annual and perennial flowering plants belong to the genus Helianthus, which is also known as the sunflower family of Asteraceae. The Helianthus species are indigenous to North America and Central America, with the exception of three South American species.
The most well-known variety is the common sunflower (Helianthus annuus), a plant with spherical flower heads with ligules that resemble the Sun. In temperate and some tropical areas, this species as well as others, most notably the Jerusalem artichoke (H. tuberosus), are grown as attractive plants as well as food crops for people, livestock, and fowl.
The peak growth period for the species H. annuus is in the middle of the summer, and it usually grows throughout the summer and into the early fall.
