The Romans called it lapis porphyrites; a precious and unique purple stone found only in Egypt. We call it Porphyry today.

A mine for the stone was discovered during the reign of Tiberius in the first century AD; it’s rarity, regal colour association and the direct Imperial ownership of the mine meant that it was only really used in Imperial projects such as here; at Hadrians Temple of Venus and Rome.

Astonishly, the mine was “lost” in the 5th century and not rediscovered until the 19th century.
