The Oriental dove has extremely similar plumage to the Turtle dove. It is slightly larger than that species, particularly orientalis, which is around the size of a collared dove.

It has a black and white striped patch on the side of its neck made of silver-tipped feathers, but the breast is less pink, and the turtle dove's orange-brown wing feathers are replaced with a browner hue and darker centers, giving it a scaly look.

The tail is wedge-shaped, like a turtle dove. The flight is smoother and more direct than its relative. The turtle-dove also has an exposed area of skin around its eyes, but the oriental dove does not.
