Typically the battery time on smart phones isn't all that bad to be honest. However, smart phones do generally have greater energy consumption due to the amount of hardware that they have to support. They have much stronger CPUs, often dedicated graphics hardware to play games and run other graphics related apps. They also generally have better wifi support, etc. All of these things contribute to increased energy consumption.
