What is the advantage of VoIP over standard telephone line?

Typically VOIP packages are cheaper and include a full host of features for little or no cost, whereas you would have to pay extra for added features such as call waiting, caller ID, and so forth. Another benefit is that generally 'most' VOIP services are not always location dependent, you could use your VOIP phone at another location, as long as you had internet service, Skype for example, among other proivders, however, this would not always apply to an ISP's VOIP service which may very well be location dependent.
