Edge is basically a 2nd generation (2.75G) technology. The main difference from 3G is that it does not offer the broadband data speeds the 3rd generation technology offers. 3G can achieve data speeds ten times that of Edge.
The original iPhone supports Edge instead of 3G probably because the technology is cheaper and also supports long battery life.
