No regular smartphone are different they can only work or send messages and calls threw an active network system,
However this does not mean that you cannot communicate on space. NASA has Sattelite phone which can communicate with the astronaut and the spaceship itself.
Don't beilive me? Then how does NASA maintain the safety of the spaceship?
