No you do not need a google account to use your Android cellphone but if you may not be able to enjoy a lot of facilities like downloading applications, use emails and other important features. You will be able to enjoy the built in applications i.e. already installed in your phone and miss whole lot of games. So I suggest you to sign in your android phone with a gmail account.
