Simply because the UKs network is the oldest and most complex and needs upgrading. The UK networks backbo e belongs to BT and they have to pay cor its upkeep and upgrade. The other internet suppliers simply tag on to the back of the network and supply the local link to the customer renting the use of the backbone network. BT also has to provide a telephone service to every home in the uk no matter how remote , under law and so is expensive. The UK needs more competition and more fibre optic lines to all homes, not just in very urban areas.
