I'm not sure whether it's worth taking it to an "unofficial" repair place because I'm not sure that would ensure the water-proofing is restored? On the other hand I've heard it's extremely expensive to get it fixed through your provider?

Broken screen can be replaced but it is really expensive £170. Paying more will give you peace of mind at least because of quality work. But if you have mobile insurance or warranty then you can claim to the company and get it repaired.
