Giving students Assignments is the best approach to keep track of their development. You'll be able to see who has finished the content you've given them (and when they completed it).
You may also use Reporting and Leader boards to keep track of how many courses and chapters users have completed, their overall XP, and the last time they gained XP in the last 30 days, 90 days, a year, or all-time.
