What kind of cell phones are suitable for seniors depends on whether they are techno savvy or not and whether they would like to learn using an android phone. For seniors who are keen on learning, touch phones will not be an issue. however, for others who are not and who just require the phones for calling and receiving calls, simple phones - that is, the ones which ae not touch phones will be better. Nokia and Samsung have good models.

There are special "senior phones" made for elderly people, with big buttons, big font display, no smart functions, etc.

I would recommend a basic nokia smartphone like nokia asha.  The look and features are almost the same as an old analog phone. If the main use will be for calling, texting and basic surfing then that unit/ brand will serve its purpose.
