Modularity is the concept of devices that operate using interchangeable hardware components, instead of being singular constructions with hardware that is very difficult to customize. Most of the devices we buy these days, especially cellphones, come in a prepackaged configuration with no way of changing hardware unless you have a degree in electronic engineering. Modularity is a type of technology which utilizes easily interchangeable components of hardware (such as battery, storage, camera, speaker), enabling hardware customization, and also extending the lifespan of the device. It means that if one component of a device breaks or malfunctions, the entire device doesn't need to be replaced - only the broken component. The idea has recently been popularized by the independent organization, Phonebloks, as a movement towards reducing electronic waste.
