Can lost laptop be located like smartphone ?

If someone stole me a laptop in public place, can it be somehow located like when smartphone is lost ?

In the case of notebooks, tracking option isn't that popular

I know there is Absolute Software able to do it, but you will have to pay up to $30

Its hard to find a stolen laptop. You can set a security password for your laptop which prevent it from opining. But finding a location where the laptop can be found is a very tough job.
