iPhone: How to identify China-only version of Apple earphones included with iPhone

The earphones that are included with iPhone 4S (and later) in the People's Republic of China are different (due to regulations) from the ones included elsewhere. This article shows you how to identify these earphones and discusses which products they are compatible with.

 

Identification

Use the following images to identify China-only earphones for iPhone 4S and Apple EarPods with Remote and Mic for iPhone 5.

Standard (non-China) earphones and EarPods	China-only earphones and EarPods

Compatibility

The China-only models are compatible only with iPhone 4S and later, iPod nano (7th generation) and later, iPod touch (5th generation) and later, and iPad 2 and later. While they are compatible with all localizations of these models, they are incompatible with all previous iPhone, iPad, and iPod models.

The standard (non-China) models are compatible with all iPhone and iPod models, including Chinese localized devices.
