Do I really need to download Messenger to chat on Facebook?

I have an old Android phone (HTC Hero on Android 2.1 Eclair), and I can't download Messenger as it is incompatible with the old version. Can I just use the browser to access the mobile version of Facebook just to chat and send private messages to friends?

Yes, sir, you can, however chatting with people would be slower and quite primitive, since you would be using the standard facebook message system. It is possible to send old-fashioned messages with non-android phones aswell. I remember, I once had to use the classic facebook mail myself, when I didn't have Internet at that time. I had to refresh the page every second to see if anyone answered, which was really expensive and difficult. So my point is, it is possible, but it's a lot slower and inefficient.

for instant Messagning its better to download the messanger on your smart phone. because it will directly pop you during ur other tasks and you will be able to respond earlier to your buddies.

Messenger is a lot better to use that the facebook messaging system but if you really don't want to download the app then you can still chat through facebook.

But if you want to use the Facebook app to chat, it will force to download Messenger, or else the chat won’t work in the main app.

Of course you can. You can also download its app of Facebook messenger to send message to your friend in Facebook. Besides,  download video from Facebook messenger is also possible now.
