To unfollow a friend on facebook does not mean you have unfriend him/her. It will only stop posting posts from your friend on your timeline. To do this open your friend list and find the friend you want to unfollow.
Infront of the name there are three vertical dots, click on it.
You will now see different options. Choose "unfollow".
Finally you will stop seeing posts about your that friend in future.
