Mostly used for labor,  a type of donkey that is indigenous to Ethiopia is the Abyssinian donkey, often known as the Ethiopian donkey. 

It has been referred to be the "backbone" of rural transportation and is employed as a beast of burden by the native population.

They are often slate-gray but can also be chestnut-brown on occasion. The breed resembles donkeys of the Sudanese Pack type.
