This form of caterpillar, which is also known as an eyed-tiger moth caterpillar or typically referred to as a "woolly bear," has black spikes all over its body, giving it a fuzzy appearance. Its fuzz is covered in crimson or orange bands, giving it the appearance of a belted black bear.
The red stripes become even more noticeable as the fuzzy caterpillar curls into a ball when it is disturbed so they can fend off potential predators. If you pick one up, you could find a small amount of yellow liquid on your hand; this is a protective measure.
You should wash your hands after touching one of these hairy critters even though the liquid doesn't harm your hands since you don't want to absorb it.
