One species, B. glabra, from Brazil, is known as paperflower for its brightly colored, papery bracts that encircle the unnoticeable flowers. Some varieties of B. glabra have bracts that range in color from purple or magenta to lighter shades.

In warm climates, the stem of B. glabra can grow to a length of 20 to 30 meters (60 to 100 feet), and the plant is in bloom for the majority of the year.

The flowers of B. spectabilis are only present for a brief period of time, and the stem is covered in numerous short hairs. The bract itself resembles a flower with showy petals when combined with an unnoticeable flower.
