Caterpillars have delicate bodies that allow them to grow quickly between moults. Their sizes range from 1 millimetre (0.039 in) to 14 centimeters (5.5 in) depending on the species and instar (moult).
Some larvae of the order Hymenoptera (ants, bees, and wasps) can resemble Lepidoptera caterpillars. These larvae are mostly found in the sawfly suborder.
While these larvae appear to be caterpillars on the surface, they are distinguished by the presence of prolegs on all abdominal segments, the absence of crochets or hooks on the prolegs (which are present on lepidopteran caterpillars), one pair of prominent ocelli on the head capsule, and the absence of the upside-down Y-shaped suture on the front of the head.
