Peas are annual plants with a 12-month life span. They are a cool-season crop that is farmed all over the world; depending on the region, planting can occur from winter to early summer.
The weight of a pea ranges from 0.1 to 0.36 grams. Field pea varieties are grown to produce dry peas that resemble split peas shelled from mature pods. The immature peas (and in snow peas, the tender pod as well) are used as a vegetable, fresh, frozen, or canned.
These form the basis of the traditional medieval dishes pease porridge and pea soup; in Europe, eating fresh, immature green peas was a development of early modern cuisine.
