A slow-growing shrub with several stems typically near the base, Dracaena fragrans can reach mature heights of 15 m (49 ft) or more and has a narrow crown with typically slender erect branches.

On mature plants, stems can grow up to 30 cm (12 in) in diameter; in forest conditions, they can become horizontal with upright side branches.

Up until the growing tip blossoms or sustains injury, young plants have a single unbranched stem with a rosette of leaves; after that, the tip branches, creating two or more additional stems; branching then increases with consecutive flowering episodes.
