The cucumber is an underground-rooted creeping vine that climbs trellises or other structures of support by twining its thin, spiraling tendrils around them. The plant can also take root in a soilless medium, in which case it will spread out on the earth without a support system.

The cucumber fruit is approximately cylindrical in shape, elongated, and has tapered ends. It can grow to a maximum length of 62 centimeters (24 in) and a maximum diameter of 10 centimeters (4 in).

95% of a cucumber fruit's weight is water. The cucumber is categorized as a pepo in botanical terminology, which is a form of berry with no interior divisions and a hard outer rind. However, it is frequently regarded, prepared, and consumed as a veggie, much like tomatoes and squashes.
