As plant scavengers, tenebrionid beetles primarily live in deserts and woods. The majority of species are generalistic omnivores that consume fresh plant material, decaying leaves, rotting wood, dead insects, and fungi as larvae and adults.
Bolitotherus is one of several genera of specialist polypore-eating fungivores. Many of the bigger species lack the ability to fly, and those that can, like T. molitor, do so only occasionally. The larvae are typically nocturnal, fossorial, and severely sclerotized. They might serve as a crucial resource for some small mammals and invertebrates.
However, many species' adults have chemical defenses and are comparatively safe from predators. Except for grain pests, most species' adults have slow metabolisms and live extended lives in comparison to other insects.
