I personally look for: good coverage, fair prices, cheap phone options. I don’t usually have to have the latest and greatest cell phone with the carrier that I choose but I want reliable service at a reasonable price. It’s difficult to find affordable cell phone providers in the USA. There seems to be more competition overseas compared to here, as the large national carriers own most of the spectrum.
I do wish the spectrum were a bit more open so that smaller companies could start-up and provide cell service, but as it stands most of the small companies are just resellers of something like AT&T.

The first thing I look for is if the service provider is available in my area. I wouldn’t want to avail a plan from a service provider that won’t work and can’t get a signal where I live. Then, I look for the free phone I can get. Then I’d work out how much I’m willing to pay for the plan, i.e. monthly charges, texts, calls, and data.
