Cuba has allowed their first public WiFi hotspot to open up in one of their cities. This is pretty good news for people of  Cuba, as well as tourists. For many years Cuba has only had a single satellite internet connection serving the entire country so very few citizens actually can access the world wide web. However with recent restrictions being lifted by the United States and less restrictions by the Cuban government on their people, there’s now a sort of  new change being brought to Cuba. In any case, I feel it’s good news for them.

The following users say thank you to Cellnut for this useful post:

This is a historic event, that will definitely mark a social revolution in Cuba. Since the last regulation related to blogging, I had my doubts that this idea will be permitted

I`m waiting to see a similar measure implemented in other countries with authoritarian regimes as Azerbaijan or Egypt

Congratulation to Cuba! Maybe they took them a little time to install their first public WIFI hotspot, which I can say the same thing about my country, but that’s a good step.

I don`t leaders behave in your country, but it`s quite strange for Fidel Castro to allow this measure in Cuba, probably he attempts to transform communism into a softer regime, since each day hundreds of Cuban risk their lives to arrive to USA, in the quest of a better life

Many countries on the world open free wifi for whole city. This is great news for Cuba residential. Hope we can access Google everywhere on the earth through wifi one day.

It`s a big step for Cuba, still freedom of speech associated with internet is a fata morgana

I haven`t read any news regarding a blog, site criticizing Fidel Castro, which wasn`t immediately close

Cubans are given something sweet to taste, but the whole cake, since it will ruin communist regime

In general Cuba seems to be moving towards a more open society, slowly. Having Internet service with potentially easy access for portions of their populations also means that their population can learn about the outside world, cultures, pros and cons about their own society and government. Additionally it means a greater education base as the population will have access to many of the resources we take for granted.
