I don’t know about any of you, but I wasn’t aware that Facebook was planning to launch a satellite in order to provide broadband to Africa. I know they were going to have drone plans and such, but never a satellite. In any case apparently they were going to spend 500 million USD on this project and then dropped it due to profitability. Here’s the source. My bet is that they’ll continue focusing on other methods of providing broadband to poor areas. Keeping in mind of course that Facebook intends to make money off of advertising and selling information of these people, it’s not purely a charitable effort.

Africa has always been an El Dorado and Facebook is aware of the potential impact of entering such a tremendous marketing
Practically, if you offer the required infrastructure, you will create your own monopoly. A continent without or little presence of Twitter or Google+ is a must-have for Facebook
Similarly to you, I think it`s a reconsideration period, Facebook thinks of finding the suitable resources to conquer Africa
