In many ways Nicaragua is still behind the times, but not when it comes to cell phones. The new rage in the country is smartphones. It seems almost everyone has one. Especially in main towns and cities this allows you access to the internet where ever you, assuming there is a wi-fi connection. They are especially handy for people that are calling international. If this is the case you can use Skype or Talkatone to contact friends and family in the States or elsewhere. You can also send pictures. They can be difficult to repair and one should keep a close eye on them as they are very popular and since they use chips that are easy to replace people are looking for them to be left unattended.

Be happy, you are users of modern technologySmile

In one year or maybe two years, things will be clearer there. I remember the rage started similarly in my country, there were people who would sacrifice their money for bread, just to be sure they would buy a smartphone, but now that they are accessible even to kindergarten children and much of its original charm is lost

In Nicaragua people are all too happy to part of the modern world. In a place where most towns do not even have telephones the ability to reach family across the country or even in the States or Costa Rica is something people here do not take for granted. Very often here families are split up, with children, brothers or husbands leaving their homes and families for extended periods of time to go to bigger towns or cities or even countries to work. The work opportunities are very limited and in some places it can be hard to feed your family. The concept of cell phones and smart phones have brought families closer even if they can not be together.
