For people in remote areas, places that do not have readily available wi-fi one option for internet service is to purchase a Claro “stick”. These are sold at Claro stores, you can not purchase them at pulperias (corner stores). This “stick” is just like a USB stick that you insert into your USB drive. The program to read it must be downloaded, and if you have a Mac it is suggested to do this directly at the store as the configuration can be difficult and if you have traveled to purchase this you do not want to get home and have it not work. Once you have this “stick” all you have to do is insert the “stick” when you want to use the internet. You can but time the same as you buy for phones by giving the number to the pulperia and re-charging as much as you want. This will give you a designated amount of time. The only warning about this, if you watch a lot of videos, Utube, CNN or others this will eat at your time much faster then simple internet searches. Be careful of this as once you start your time it does not expire until that session is over…so if you watch videos you can not log back on until that time span has been reached.

The rainy season is upon Nicaragua and that means with the rain come even MORE power outages. This has more people considering Claro internet sticks, as these generally work in San Juan del Sur, even when the power is out. They can purchased at any Claro office, including the one on the main beach road close to the port and next door to the post office. Last time I bought one it was roughly 500 Cordobas, which is about $20. You can then buy a new chip each month to keep the time coming. The Chips are cheap, roughly 30 Cordobas or just over a dollar.
