I’m seeing children as young as seven years old being given smart phones to play with or to carry with them to school. I didn’t have a cell phone until I was 16 and that was when we didn’t have smart phones yet. I can see the reason for giving children smart phones, especially when they’re not at home. However, should they be exposed to them all of the time?
Even if a parent enforces it into the children’s mind and installs software on the phone to prevent them from accessing things, it’s possible for things to happen. A lot of predators are starting to use cell phones to interact with children as well.
Just sort of starting a discussion on this to see where it goes. I personally think they should be in their teens at the very least before having one.

My nephews, both aged below 10, are currently using smartphones and tablets. They don’t own any nor bring one to school but they borrow it from their parents or from other relatives while at home or on the move (to keep them still in the car). I think it’s the balance between using these smartphones. We can’t keep such things away to kids these days especially when you can see everyone using it. It’s the guidance that these kids need from their parents and other adults around them on how to properly use it, when or where. My nephews play with their friends outside the house and play the normal games we used to play in the old days. They sometimes play (recently just dance games) using xbox, other times they play using smartphones and tablets. They both also do very well in school and they belong to the top classes.

My nephew, aged 2, uses a smartphone in a faster way than my father, which is encouraged by my sister, but in the same time it makes me wonder whether it`s not too early for technology
Children see us handling gadgets and they tend to copy our deeds, since it`s in our DNA to do it, in order to learn about the external world, yet I think when you are a parent or a close relative such as me, it`s wiser to avoid using a smartphone in front of the child. He/she will have plenty of time to discover it

I don’t see a problem why kids should use smartphones or tablets too young about 7-8 years old, (I have seen younger kids who know how to use it sometimes better than grownups), everybody is using one and they will want and use it eventually, but also the kids should not have all the freedom to use the smartphone as they please and whenever they want.

The average age you mentioned seems more reasonable than what I saw in the case of my relatives and friends. When I was 2-3 years old, I was occupied with the discovery of the world, my only connection with TV (the only gadget that I was allowed) was the moment when Tom & Jerry was broadcasted

There really is a big difference when it comes to technology during our time and today’s generation. Of course we won’t have that chance to do what kids do today because technology in the old times are not that advance as today. TV was our only means of entertainment as a kid and other than that, we have to play the games like running, puzzles and such.
With today’s generation, there are tons of tech gadget. Computers are even used in schools at an early age. Some schools even would let them use a tablet (ipad, android, etc.) as a tool for learning. You can’t keep that away from kids. The only thing the parents and the adults around them can do is to guide them properly, how and when to use it, and of course make sure that they also have physical activities that would be good for their health like engaging in sports. The failure usually comes when parents aren’t bothered enough.
