We only have a small number of actual infrastructure based providers. AT&T, Verizion, T-Mobile, Sprint, and a few other smaller providers. There’s also a wide variety of ‘reseller services’ for those national providers. The problem to me however is, there’s only so much wireless spectrum available to use, and it’s already been contracted out to these large corporations.

T-Mobile for a long time was thought by many to be merged into AT&T, but the deal fell through.  If it hadn’t, we as customers would have had far less competition, and no room for new competition.

It seems like a fundamental problem to me to allow companies to purchase such large amounts of spectrum. Meanwhile in other countries you generally have a wider variety of cell service providers.

I guess it`s a common situation worlwide, to have your national market dominated by two or three providers, leaving little room for competition to appear

In Romania, the cake is divided between Orange, Vodafone and Cosmote, with the perspective of a fourth provider to change the rule

It’s an interesting idea.. does competition generate better service, and if so, how much competition should there be?

People today don’t remember back thirty years ago when AT&T was the only game in town and there was no such thing as cell phones…

Competition absolutely create better service. In my country, if you change your recent internet/cell phone contract to another and you got your last month bill, you will be got special discount immediately from the first month until forever.

Generally, a monopoly is very sure of its position, when little rivals appear things change to be perceived differently, since those rivals can become big headaches

I guess everything started in the same way. In my country, at the time one provider was available, mobile telecommunication was a luxury, in less than five years, appeared the first competitor and more users can afford the old luxury
