I know that if you take your “regular” cellphone overseas, it won’t work, but you can get a special chip…or sim card I think? that will let you call people when you’re in Europe, for example.

Anyone know if all smartphones can get this chip, or just a few of them?

I can tell you from my experience that when I travelled to USA, I used my common Nokia phone (on that period there weren`t smartphone), which was unlocked and bought a local SIM card

If you came to arrive, you can do the same thing, just make sure your gadget isn`t locked. You will have plenty of prepaid services, according to the local market of telecommunication

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I live in the United States, though, so my question was regarding other countries – for example if I were to travel to England or Portugal (a country I’m hoping to visit next year!)

If you want to visit Portugal, you can use your current subscription on roaming mode, which might be quite expensive or you can buy a local SIM card, suitable for any unlocked smartphone or older phone

Meo sells the prepaid SIM suggestively called Hello, flexible for tourists or customers with a fixed budget

Vodafone promotes a prepaid service, charging you 0.8 eurocents/min

Almost of SIM will be locked if your travelled to the other countries. But the carriers always support “oversea servive” for their sim. You can ask them directly about this package. I saw my friends usually do that when they come back to their hometown from US.

Meo is quite affordable and I noticed it`s more used than Vodafone, at least from my experience

I had to make some calls and the only numbers on Vodafone`s network were that of the tourism agency and of the transport company
