Named after Shiva’s consort Gauri, also known as Parvati, the town of Gaurikund, 4 km from Sonprayag, serves as the base camp for the trek to Kedarnath. It is said that Gauri did severe penance here to win Shiva as her husband. Gaurikund houses several hot springs which have been converted to bathing houses for the pilgrims.
