Glass gem is a beautiful, translucent, jeweled ears, each one different type chosen over several years by Oklahoman farmer and breeder Carl Barnes, who is half-Cherokee.

Selected seed from the colorful, translucent kernels after crossing various conventional corn kinds. A gift from Bill McDorman, who got the seed from Greg Schoen, one of Carl's pupils.

Barnes was able to recover ancestral types of maize that were lost to Native American tribes when they were transported to what is now Oklahoma in the 1800s by cultivating these older corn varieties.
