The wild marigold species Tagetes tenuifolia, often known as the signet marigold, golden marigold, or lemon marigold, belongs to the Asteraceae family. The majority of Mexico, as well as Central America, Colombia, and Peru, all have it growing there.

An annual herb, Tagetes tenuifolia can grow up to 50 cm (20 in) tall. A flat-topped array of several small, bright yellow flower heads with five ray florets and seven to nine disc florets are produced by the plant. Due to its lemon-like flavor, the plant's edible blossoms can be used as a garnish. They can withstand brief frosts since they are quite resilient.

The plant does best in soil that drains rather well and is primarily sunny. The plants may become bushy and produce fewer flowers in overly fertile soil. Marigolds flower in the middle of the summer and come in a variety of colors, primarily yellows and oranges.
