Originally from Mauritius and Eastern India, the plant is now widely naturalized in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. It is currently growing wild in several areas of Tamil Nadu after recently spreading to southern India.
It is typically grown as a flowering hedge plant for aesthetic purposes. The ideal growing conditions for B. lupulina are warm, humid, and sandy or loam sandy soils with a pH range of 6.1 to 8.5. prefers rich, wet, but well-drained soil and a spot in the sun or some shade.
It can also be found growing up to 300 meters above sea level in disturbed regions and at the sides of roads in Australia.
